DESY's MSK group is responsible for controls, feedback regulations and synchronization of the particle accelerators at DESY and external research infrastructures. We are an international team of technicians, engineers and scientists who develop, install and operate complex instrumentation for the European XFEL, FLASH and PETRA III.
The European XFEL laser group engages in research, development and operation of high-power femtosecond and picosecond laser systems for use at the scientific instruments at the European XFEL.

The dynamics of physical, chemical or biological phenomena can be unraveled in so-called pump-probe experiments. In order to improve the temporal resolution of such experiments on short and long time-scales, a new detection scheme will be developed and employed at a scientific instrument driven by the FEL in the framework of a common project between DESY and the European XFEL. For this project we are seeking a highly motivated laser scientist.

About your role:

  • Development, installation and benchmarking of laser pulse arrival time monitors
  • Integration of the arrival time monitor into the experiment hall infrastructure and the control system
  • Characterization of noise, long-term drift and stability
  • Documentation of the system
  • Presentation of the R&D results on international conferences

Limited: 3 years

About you:

  • PhD degree in physics, electrical engineering, laser engineering, photonics or similar discipline
  • Excellent knowledge and hands-on experience with ultrafast laser systems, nonlinear optics and opto-electronics
  • Experience in simulating optical systems is advantageous
  • Experience in system integration, analog and digital electronics and programming abilities is advantageous
  • Self-driven and awareness for high-quality work
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
