DESY, with more than 2700 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

DESY looks back on a long tradition in synchrotron radiation experiments in a wide range of applications and has developed into one of the leading international centers in this field. For high-end synchrotron radiation applications, the 3rd generation source PETRA III is available since 2009 as one of the most brilliant X-ray sources worldwide. The Swedish Materials Science beamline P21 at PETRA III is dediated to material characterization with multi-modal methodology using high energy X-ray diffraction and scattering methods. High energy X-rays exhibit high penetration into the sample and allow for complex sample environments and therefore have great potential for industrial applications.

About your role:

  • Support of external user groups and customers from industry, in particular from Sweden, during the experiment at P21 and during data analysis
  • Develop and implement new services for users of P21, in particular for users from industry
  • Develop and conduct a scientific project in the area of materials characterization using high energy synchrotron radiation
  • The project should have relevance for industrial applications
  • If successful, the position can evolve in a permanent employment
