The Landau Group is located at the CSSB Centre for Structural Systems Biology (www.cssb-hamburg.de) that is dedicated to infection biology using structural and molecular biology methods and imaging techniques in conjunction with systems biology approaches. Our goal is to unravel the underlying mechanisms of important pathogenic processes to find better treatment options against bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens. For this, we use the globally unique research infrastructures on the DESY campus. CSSB is a joint initiative of nine research partners in northern Germany and opened in 2017. Our aim is to establish an internationally leading research centre in the Hamburg metropolitan area.

About your role:

  • Technical and scientific support for the research and development projects of the working group
  • Maintenance of cell cultures: (mammalian cells & bacterial cultures)
  • Protein expression and purification
  • Molecular biology techniques as needed
  • Biophysical assays
  • Preparation of buffers, media, and solutions
  • Documentation of experiments and results

Limited: 2 years

About you:

  • Completed training as a Biological Laboratory Technician (BTA) or comparable qualification
  • Experience working in a BSL-2 laboratory is desirable
  • Excellent technical knowledge and practical experience in molecular biology, bacterial and mammalian cell culture, protein purification, biochemical methods, and use of databases for organizing samples and laboratory inventories; knowledge of biophysical methods is beneficial
  • Very good written and spoken English language skills
  • Willingness to further develop complex methods according to the specific requirements of the working group at the interface of protein structure/function and to explore new methods
  • Independent handling of complex scientific equipment and methods
  • Service provision for molecular biology techniques
  • High degree of self-organization, sense of responsibility, and reliability
  • Ability to quickly integrate into a diverse and multicultural team
