DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The DESY campus in Hamburg is the home of some of the world's most brilliant light sources for photon research: the soft to hard X-ray synchrotron radiation source PETRA III and the free-electron laser FLASH in the soft X-ray range. DESY is also responsible for the operation and development of the accelerator for the European XFEL. In addition, DESY is preparing the PETRA IV project - the ultimate X-ray microscope with outstanding potential for academic and industrial users. These facilities make DESY the world's leading centre for X-ray research. Research activities at DESY Photon Science are carried out in several interdisciplinary centres on site together with partner institutions. All of these centres are developing dynamically. Central Mechanics (ZM) is also part of the Photon Science Division. The Division Manager of Photon Science supports the Director as an advisor and deputy, particularly in administrative matters.

About your role:

  • Support and representation of the Photon Science Director in all activities
  • Carry out and update long-term strategic planning (finance & personnel)
  • Identify the needs of scientific areas and projects and analyse and plan the possibilities for their implementation in consultation with the administration and infrastructure
  • Initiate and introduce new working methods / organisational measures
  • Provide targeted support for staff development
  • Participation in DESY committees (project commission, divisional advisors, health management, space commission, etc.)
  • Management of the Photon Science Division Head Office
