For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Postdoctoral researcher in beam-driven plasma accelerator science

Limited: 3 years | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: MMA033/2023 | Deadline: 17.10.2024 | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

Particle accelerators based on novel plasma technology are promising to positively disrupt a multitude of accelerator-based applications in the health sector, industry, and fundamental research. Given their high-potential for impact in society at-large, plasma accelerators form a cornerstone of the DESY accelerator research and development strategy. This advanced accelerator concept leverages extreme fields in the GV/m-range, which exceed those achievable with traditional radiofrequency accelerators by orders of magnitude. As a consequence, plasma-based particle accelerators are the key to the miniaturisation of today’s large-scale accelerator installations and to the future deployment of compact, mobile systems. DESY advances all facets of beam- and laser-driven plasma accelerators with a focus on programmatic R&D toward high-average-power, stable beams and developing frontier technologies to deliver on the potential of plasma-based particle acceleration. As part of this effort, we are developing a plasma energy-booster module for our flagship FEL facility, the European X-FEL. In this context, we are looking for postdoctoral researchers to join the team.

About your role:

  • Solution of complex problems in the field of beam-driven plasma accelerators
  • Integration of a plasma-booster module into the existing accelerator beamline, both, in terms of hardware and operation concept
  • Experimental plasma-accelerator tests in the FLASHForward beamline
  • Simulation studies of the plasma module

Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.

Limited: 3 years

About you:

  • PhD in physics or equivalent, with a focus on plasmas, plasma wakefield accelerators, and accelerator physics
  • Experience with at least one of: particle in cell simulations, plasma sources and metrology, or particle accelerators and associated diagnostics
  • Self-motivated with a strong desire to drive central aspects of your work forward independently and as part of a team
