DESY develops the PETRA IV facility, the ultimate X-ray microscope for nano research with outstanding potential for industrial users and societally relevant applications in energy research, information technology, mobility, environment and medicine. PETRA IV will provide the highest resolution for experiments on relevant length, time and energy scales with all possibilities for in-situ/operando analysis. At the same time, a new business model is being developed at the synchrotron radiation source PETRA Ill, which includes a new and innovative operation model for the user community, with a comprehensive service concept that involves laboratories and sample environments. The User Chemistry Laboratory Team operates the chemistry laboratories and clean room facility at PETRA Ill and with this, it is involved in the scientific work at beamlines. The team works with international user groups and enables preparation of their experimental setups and samples that are investigated at the PETRA Ill beamlines. The Chemistry Team is responsible for the development of the user laboratories at PETRA Ill and the planning of the laboratory environment at the future PETRA IV facility. The Chemistry Team will strongly contribute to the new business model with the extension of the sample preparation and investigation methods. We are looking for a technician with chemical background who supports PETRA Ill users in the chemistry and clean room labs and takes part in planning of the PETRA IV laboratory environment.

About your role:

  • Planning and setting-up of laboratories (chemistry and bio laboratories as well as physical preparation laboratories), including gas and vacuum infrastructure
  • Self-responsible maintenance and repair of lab instruments and infrastructure
  • Construction of new lab Infrastructure with CAD software
  • Prepare samples, installation and operation of experiments
  • Instruction and support international customers/users under consideration of safety rules
  • Self-responsible working on administrative processes, such as ordering, maintenance and reporting
  • Work with software catalogues and office products

About you:

  • Bachelor of Engineering or State-Certified Technician with specialization in chemical engineering, process technology or comparable specialization with equivalent skills and experience
  • Knowledge and experience in creating planning-documents and using 3D CAD software for construction
  • Knowledge in the field of applications with gas and vacuum systems
  • Knowledge in chemical-biological safety regulations and preparation of safety documentation
  • Knowledge of the use of catalogues and Office products
  • Knowledge in construction and operation of experiments and/or laboratories
  • Ability to communication with international researchers
  • Ability to support laboratories on a 0.5km² campus
  • Very good communication skills in English and German
