A new onsite data centre is being set up for the CTAO (Cherenkov Telscope Array Observatory) astroparticle observatory at two locations in La Palma and Chile.

The data centre at DESY, Zeuthen with 15,000 TB storage, 10,000 cores, 120 GPUs and more than 1,000 servers will take on this task with your support and will also operate these data centres remotely with local support after the construction phase.

About your role:

  • Data and software engineering for the adaptation, project planning and implementation of the required software
  • Recording the requirements of the experiment
  • Evaluation of different alternatives and presentation of the results to the experiments
  • Automated configuration and disaster recovery of both the base installation and the application data
  • Support for developers in integrating the developed software into a standardized release and deployment process
  • Support of developers in the definition of monitoring points in the developed software
  • Operate applications that support software development
  • Planning, implementation and maintenance of the CTA onsite data centres
  • Installation from scratch of a complete data centre with among other things, distributed storage, batch computing
  • Monitoring and alerting systems
  • Automation of the necessary software from the operating system to infrastructure services and monitoring
  • Roll-out and monitoring of operating system updates

About you:

  • University degree in computer science, information technology or mathematics or equivalent expertise, skills and experience
  • Unix admin and scripting skills - ideal for Redhat based systems
  • Programmer, basic knowledge preferably Python
  • Experience in container technologies, building containers, operation of applications in containers, kubernetes, docker, dockercompose, helm
  • Knowledge of configuration management tools (ansible,puppet,chef,salt), preferably Ansible
  • Experience in monitoring of Linux systems prefers Prometheus
  • Specialist knowledge and experience with CI/CD Tools, prefers Gitlab CI and Jenkins
  • Very good knowledge of English and good knowledge of German
  • Knowledge of Harbor, Nexus Repository, Gitlab is helpful
